SA weather: Gawler on flood emergency watch as river threatens to burst

Oct 1, 2016

Residents of the South Australian town of Gawler and surrounding areas are now on flood emergency watch as the nearby river threatens to burst.

Late on Sunday night the SES said water levels were very high in the Gawler River, which has already broken its banks in several places.

SES chief of staff Leanne Adams said crews were sourcing sandbags from outside of Adelaide to cope with the threat.

Timeline of major earthquakes in Pakistan: 1971-2015

On October 26, 2015, a strong earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude struck major cities of Pakistan, including the northern areas. Strong tremors were also felt in Kabul and New Delhi.

The quake, which lasted at least one minute, shook buildings in Islamabad, Kabul and New Delhi, sending people rushing into the streets.

ISLAMABAD: An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale struck northern Pakistan's Kaghan Valley on Saturday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The Raikot Glacier is breathing its last

Since mid 90's of last century APM Volunteers are recording glacier mass deficit of Northern Areas of Pakistan including Swat Kohistan!

Hamza Saeed Sheikh recently led a monitoring expedition and provided this evidence that the most famous Fairy Meadows in the foothills of Nanga Parbat has been undergoing an irrecoverable ecological loss. The Raikot Glacier is breathing its last!

(ATABAD LAKE: This accidental lake is one of the aftermaths of Climate Change)

In HKH Pakistan, most of the summer remains dry & it rains in winter rather than snowfall. Deforestation of cloud forests of these ranges is imposing a decline in glaciers that are the life line of the entire Indus River. Absence of forests & torrential rains that had never been a part of climate scene of these highlands have accelerated landslide incidents. Atabad Lake is an example of such disaster.
